Sensitive touch in East London.
This project involved the careful reworking of a historic Victorian townhouse located in a fashionable London postcode. Our clients wished to modernise the ground floor, improve the relationship between inside and outside space, and exploit dramatic views over Victoria Park from the top floor of the house.
The property lies within a highly sensitive Conservation Area, with strict planning controls mandating high quality design and a sensitive response to both existing building and surrounding context.

The lower floor plan is flipped - in order to create space for a large, family sized kitchen and island breakfast bar. Existing windows are replaced with glass doors to provide a direct link to the terrace.
The existing dividing wall is removed to create a single open-plan kitchen/dining space. Chunky timber steps marry the two floor levels and double as bench seating along one side of the new dining area.
The existing utility room, protruding at the rear, is replaced with a new brick extension incorporating an eye-catching openable glazed corner, frameless roof window and green roof. This extends the dining area into a new sitting area, or garden room, enjoying plenty of natural light and a direct connection to both terrace and garden.

Top floor - loft lounge and terrace.
A little used top floor spare bedroom is reinvented as an exciting loft lounge and entertaining space enjoying stunning views over neighbouring Victoria Park.
Taking it’s cue from the geometry of the existing Victorian facade and fenestration, a new contemporary zinc-clad extension is added at roof level.
Floor to ceiling glazed bi-folding doors frame park views and open onto a new roof terrace with glazed balustrades to ensure uninterrupted sight lines.
