Multi-generational sommarhus in Norrtälje.

An ambitious client brief inspired the creation of this innovative and flexible design. Through an efficient plan, and a combination of private and shared social spaces, this development will form a flexible base enabling enjoyment of the family sommarställe for many generations to come.

Proposed Lower Floor Plan

Making every m2 count.

The Detaljplan allowed a maximum total footprint of only 120 m2.

Our client wanted to create a place where extended family and friends could come together. However it was also important to create a degree of privacy.

The resulting design creates two independent, compact homes: a smaller for Mother (or visiting friends) and a larger for the family. The space between houses is communal - part roofed and part open - for use by both houses as shared gathering and dining spaces.

A third small stuga - making use of a separate Friggebod area allowance - provides a communal laundry/utility and sauna.

Cost effective & low maintenance.

The budget demanded cost-effective, low maintenance materials, as well as simple construction methods to enable parts of the project to be completed as a self-build.

Fasads and roofs are therefore clad in profiled metal sheeting to create a robust and maintenance-free Sommarhus which can take care of itself during Winter months.

This more ‘industrial’ material is softened through the selection of traditional Falu Red colouring, which helps to harmonise the development within this traditional sommarstuga area.
